Sweet Home Chicago

Last week I went out to Chicago to see the school. No joke, it looks like I got into Hogwarts. The campus has a very old school academic quality to it: gothic buildings, giant wooden doors, ivy, and more nooks and cranies than an english muffin.

The end result of the trip is that I’m more scared and excited than ever before. The five month gap before I begin school just doesn’t feel like enough time to accomplish everything.

matthew bernius: super genius

or at least inventor. I got word last week that a patent that I was a co-inventor for was approved by the US Patent office. Cool beans! Between that and Chicago you’d think I’d be feelin’ pretty smart.

I guess I do, I’m still overwhelmed and trying to figure out where this is taking me.

I’m in

I got word last night in the form of a big envolope.

Dear Mr Bernius:

On behalf of the Division of Social Sciences, I am pleased to offer you admission to the University of Chicago for graduate study in the Master of Arts Program in the Social Sciences for the 2004/2005 academic year.

Perhaps more surpising was what came next:

In addition, I am pleased to inform you that we can offer financial assistance

They are funding 1/3, approximately $10,000 of my cost.

I don’t know what to say, I’m scared and excited at the same time.

Still no word

I thought I had gotten the letter yesterday. But it turned out to be an information packet from another school. “ANOTHER SCHOOL???!!!” you say. Yup. I had to have a backup plan in case I didn’t get into Chicago right? More to follow on that based on how the next few weeks play out.

But I do promise that a lot of stuff is going to go down and very soon!

Admissions decisions are mailed to all applicants who meet the December 28 deadline no later than the second week in March.

Ok, then I’m entering into the last three weeks of waiting. All too soon I’m going to find out about Chicago.

That sound you all are hearing is my stomach churning.
