So, as usual, I’ve been blitzed. This is part of the reason: 24 Hour Comics Day. This was a idea dreamed up by Scott McCloud — create a 24 page comic in 24 hours. October 7th is the official 24 Hour Comic Day. RIT’s the only site in New York state and I’m one of the organizers. So that means I’ll be here at our library for 24 hours. That said, I’m not doing a comic :(. Instead I’m opting to document the event. The following is an entry I just uploaded to the 24 Hour Comic Blog.

We’re almost 10 hours in and going strong. The group has decreased to 14 artists, but the work is amazing! And the fun everyone is having is even better!

Here’s a breakdown of the work that’s going on:

The newly formed "Team Awesome" is cranking on the following:

  • Michael – Applesauce.
  • James – The chronicle of how drum major Dan became the drum major for Satan’s marching band.
  • Lindsey – Whether true love exists and the things that draw people together.
  • Alfie – BANG (the end of KILL)

Our other team, Vicky & Laela, are working on "A story that has nothing to do with anything but is really funny — Four characters meet their creators."

As for everyone else, we have:

  • Dan – Nightclaw: the beginning
  • Benjamin – Man on a Mission: One man’s quest to repair to the ozone layer aka hold on you 2 your layers aka deeper still, Ben’s not crazy.
  • Eric – A fantasy action story in search of a title.
  • Kurt – Deaf Buddha: the meaning of life.
  • Dorothy – An autobiographical comic.
  • Chuanshi – X-painters

Here are some random shots from the event. You can see the Flickr page for the event here.:

Team Awsome hard at work! Last heard around those parts:
Lindsey: This page, that is only one drawing, is taking a whole long amount of time.
Alfie: Can you be any more emo?
James: Please keep your amazing art over there for a few moments while the rest of us weep.
Comics!

Not only are Vikki and Laela a creative team, but they also serve as each other’s models. Laela uses Vikki as a model for a panel.

By this point, I had really planned to revamp my website. But, as was best put by John Lennon "Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans." And in many respects I’ve been getting trapped by things I’ve wanted to do, but have yet to accomplish. So rather than be trapped, I’m freeing myself and posting.

Here are the big things.

  1. On August 26th, Andrea and I got married. It was a small ceremony which is what we both wanted and it ended up happening in our backyard. We ended up having about 80 guests. Obviously this has been in the works for a while. I haven’t blogged about it because, well, I wasn’t quite sure how to. There are a lot of people I wished we could have invited, but that just wasn’t going to work. The entire thing turned out wonderful, epsecially considering that a little more than a week before the wedding, Drea was checked into Rochester General for an acute lupus flair. Thankfully, we had caught it in time, but the net of it was an effort to cut as much stress out of the wedding as possible. And thankfully there was plenty of family and friends in town to assist us with last minute tasks. If you’re interested in seeing pictures of the wedding, visit Jenny’s ever excellent blog for some terrific pictures.
  2. I’ve just started my second week as a visiting professor at RIT and I’m navigating going "back to school." I’m developing one course this quarter — Web Design for Graphic Media  — and revising a previously taught course — Principles of Printing. What I’m still getting used to are the additional responsibilities of being full time faculty vs. my experience as a "full time" adjunct. File all of this under, you don’t understand how much time you have until you loose it.
  3. Plus, I’m finally settling down, by that I mean, I’m moving my stuff out of a number of temporary abodes (and public storage facilities) and into Andrea’s house in Penfeild.
  4. Finally, I’m coordinating bring Scott McCloud to RIT. For those who don’t know him, McCloud is a comic book creator and theorist. His books Understanding Comics and Reinventing Comics explore the evolution of graphic literature, from early civilizations to modern works, and the semiotic interpretation of the medium’s form, function, and pacing. With his latest book, Making Comics, McCloud turns his attention to the production of comic books, including approaches to page design, character creation, and various avenues for self publishing. McCloud’s research has been used in a number of academic and professional disciplines ranging from illustration to video game design. As a speaker, McCloud has lectured at MIT, Harvard University, Electronic Arts, The Smithsonian, Microsoft, and Pixar. I am really excited about getting McCloud to RIT and have been working on this all summer. He’ll be here Monday, September 18th, speaking from 3.00pm to 5.00pm. The lecture, and reception that follows, is free to the public.

I know there is more that I’m missing, but this is a pretty good start. I’m sorry I haven’t talked to all who I should have talked to about the wedding. But now that things are settling down (at least in theory) I’m looking forward to catching up. More tomorrow.

With one possible exception, this is going to be the last post until RIT starts. I’m going to revamp the site a bit either by or soon after that date. So tune back in around September 4th for postings and a waking-dream relaunch.

Ok. Just got an e-mail. It looks as if, by the end of today, I can finally start sharing some of the big news.

In the meantime, I’m still chugging away at a number of things.

Ok, so I just found out today, that at least one big announcement needs to wait for a bit longer. Like to the end of July. Which I’d really like to share, but until pen has met paper, I don’t want to jinx anything — though I imagine with that description, hopefully everyone will have a good idea about the news.
