Things are slowing here. Some of our creators have given in to sleep (I think our collection is going to have a number of Eastman Variations). We attribute it to this hunk of kryptonite we discovered in Vicky’s soda.

BTW, make sure to check out the offical blog/archive of 24 Hour Comic Day located here.

I just noticed that the photo of Scott McCloud and  "How to draw comics the Marvel way" displayed below, has appeared on The Beat, a comics industry site. Unfortunately, I expect that Henry Jenkins will get more traffic from the article than I will (deservedly so — the dude is frickin’ smart). Either way, thanks for the nod Heidi!

Ok, since I still bleed yellow (and it’s not from jaundice), check out my Scott McCloud Lecture Kodak Gallery!

I’ve spent most of the last two days escorting Scott McCloud and his wonderful family around and about the RIT campus. The lecture yesterday went off without a hitch ??? in fact, it was better than I could have asked.

[Crowd in Ingle]

Ingle was filled with a combination of students, faculty, and community members. We’re estimating about 375 in all! Scott told me that was roughly the same turn out as at MIT. Not too shabby!

You can read Scott’s account at the 50 State Tour Blog.

[McCloud Lecturing]

Here’s a shot of McCloud lecturing. For those traditionalists out there, note that he’s lecturing in front of a page from Learn to Draw Comics the Marvel Way.

[Talking with a Fan]

After the lecture, a mini-lecture by McCloud’s daughter Sky, and a long Q&A session (facilitated by his other daughter Winter), we headed upstairs for the signing. As you can see above, the signing line wrapped all around the upper rooms. We sold out of Making Comics. In fact, I heard a couple disappointed attendees trying to bribe the bookstore to let go of copies that were on hold for people.

[Talking with Fans]

For more than an hour (by my count close to two) Scott greeted and talked with each person in line. He made every person seem like they are the only person that he’s talked to ??? regardless if they were at the beginning of the line or at the tail end of it (this is a quality that he shares with his friend Neil Gaiman). I can only imagine how tired his wrist is going to get on this tour.

Today was wonderful as well. Unfortunately, I need to grade, so that account will come tomorrow. Either way, I’m beaming that RIT seems to have matched MIT in turnout and hospitality.

I’ve been meaning to post something other than ruminations for a bit. So I thought I’d share some recent photographs that I’ve taken. ‘Nothing fancy, just shots of everyday life around here.

Hail Stone from this Weekend

This past Sunday was a day of strange weather. That afternoon alternated between sunny skies and wrath of God here in Rochester. At one point we heard what sounded like ping pong balls hitting the roof and realized it was hailing. While I’ve experienced hail before, I never remember it so driving or so large. Nor did I have a digital camera at the time. I know that this is nothing compared to what they get in the American Mid West. Still the novelty of it was enough to warrant a video. Check it out here.

[Stack of books for my database publishing class]

Today, while walking for coffee, Frank Romano called me into his office and thrust this stack of books into my hands. He generously donated these copies of his book Personalized & Database Printing: The Complete Guide to the students in my Database Publishing Class. This is why Frank rocks the party.

And finally…

[Tara -- The Bobcat at Wildwings]

This is Tara the Bobcat, a resident of Wild Wings Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to caring for permanently injured animals (primarily birds of prey). Tara was illegally raised for the exotic pet trade and de-clawed on all four paws before the ring was shut down by the USDA. So she can’t be returned to the wild. Since she’s been raised around humans all her life, she’s pretty calm and sometimes needs a scratch behind the ear (and is gracious enough not to eat my head while I snapped this picture of her).

My connection to Wild Wings is through my better half who is a board member and educator there. If you are ever in the proximity of Mendon Ponds Park, stop by and visit Tara and the other animals!
