Another opening, another show…

Size of last night’s house: 24

That’s not bad. Tonight should be much bigger. Sunday, who knows…. The show went well. The problem with a small audience is they don’t know how to react. When you’re by yourself or in a big crowd of people it’s easy to laugh. When it’s a small group of strangers, forget about it. So a lot of the jokes were lost. :-(

But there were not any major screw ups. The show ran on time (other than a set change that took a short eternity). So I’m more or less satisfied.

ther’s no business like show business

Tonight’s the night. We’re just aobut ready to open. Unfortunately we were building up until the last minute (as my hand covered with dried paint suggest). The person who was supposed to provide us with a fire place fell through so I quickly built one yesterday. The acting has really shaped up as well, I just wish I could have been really concentrating on it these past two weeks instead of worring about everything else.

Here are a couple shots I took over the last few days to show you part of the process:

The individual flats that will eventually become an apartment drying and waiting to be assembled.

Jeff, our Tech Director, and Chris, one of the actors, work on securing the flats together.

Prior to a dress rehersal the cast warms up with a “pass the ball” acting drill.

This shot was from the open dress rehersal we had on Saturday night. The set is mostly assembled, but the molding still needs to be painted and the fireplace needs to be added. Also we didn’t have theatrical lighting for that performance.

ok… that’s about it for now. Regualar blogging will resume after this weekend.

update

We had a really, really good rehersal tonight. Not that everyone got their lines right or tjat it was perfect. But it worked and it restored a bit more of my faith. More on that after sleep (provided I have time to blog).

bloggers: be immortalized as a pixilated cartoon character

R. Stevens creator of Diesel Sweeties is looking for a web blogger to add to an upcoming storyline in his strip. So if you’ve ever wanted to be in the funnies, drop him a note. Perhaps you can guest star with the Red Robot! On second thought, don’t enter and it might increase my chances. Yeah right, stupid head Wil Wheaton will probably win out! *Grumble Grumble* Damn that Wil Wheaton, he’s always one step ahead of me!!!!

A crew, a crew, my kingdom for a crew!

And I don’t mean of the “2-Live” variety. We still don’t have enough crew for the show. Trying not to panic too much about this. If you know anyone in Rochester who would be interested drop me a note!

On the plus side, we stand the set today/tomorrow. Now on the negative side, we’re officially a week away from opening night (ok… trying not to puke in the office). Actually, I’ve passed the panic point and now I’m at grim acceptance. The show isn’t going to be bad. It isn’t going to be what I hoped for, but that leaves room for improvement. And I’ve learned a lot from the process. And that’s all good. I’m looking forward to seeing it all together and I’m looking forward to getting my live back as well.

small bits of my life

We got 75% of the set built over the weekend. As usual we’re behind where I want us to be. This has been a valuable experience for me. I’ve learned

  • I can fit $450 worth of lumber into the back of my truck
  • How to build flats
  • How to operate a circular saw. Watch out Aaron, I’ll be a master wood worker yet!
  • How not to move a hung door (one broken frame later, I also know how to move a hung door)

A bunch of folks from the Martial Arts school went to The Combat Zone: a new biweekly mixed Martial Arts Tourney here in town. We had a couple friends who were competing and we wanted to be there to cheer them on. I expect it’s only a matter of time before our school has some entries in it (probably not me, but who knows). For the most part there were a lot of good matches. The two big injuries of the night were a dislocated shoulder and a broken nose. Considering there were 15 matches, that was pretty good.

The next two weeks are going to be crazy for me. So don’t expect too many updates in days to come.

Day’s to opening night: 11

Rehearsals before opening night: 9

….(every time I see that I think I’m going to be sick).

……..ps. to my friends and other who might be considering it: No April Fool’s Jokes PLEASE! My theatre addled mental state just can survive them right now.
