I’ve spent most of the last two days escorting Scott McCloud and his wonderful family around and about the RIT campus. The lecture yesterday went off without a hitch ??? in fact, it was better than I could have asked.

[Crowd in Ingle]

Ingle was filled with a combination of students, faculty, and community members. We’re estimating about 375 in all! Scott told me that was roughly the same turn out as at MIT. Not too shabby!

You can read Scott’s account at the 50 State Tour Blog.

[McCloud Lecturing]

Here’s a shot of McCloud lecturing. For those traditionalists out there, note that he’s lecturing in front of a page from Learn to Draw Comics the Marvel Way.

[Talking with a Fan]

After the lecture, a mini-lecture by McCloud’s daughter Sky, and a long Q&A session (facilitated by his other daughter Winter), we headed upstairs for the signing. As you can see above, the signing line wrapped all around the upper rooms. We sold out of Making Comics. In fact, I heard a couple disappointed attendees trying to bribe the bookstore to let go of copies that were on hold for people.

[Talking with Fans]

For more than an hour (by my count close to two) Scott greeted and talked with each person in line. He made every person seem like they are the only person that he’s talked to ??? regardless if they were at the beginning of the line or at the tail end of it (this is a quality that he shares with his friend Neil Gaiman). I can only imagine how tired his wrist is going to get on this tour.

Today was wonderful as well. Unfortunately, I need to grade, so that account will come tomorrow. Either way, I’m beaming that RIT seems to have matched MIT in turnout and hospitality.

Please, come and see McCloud lecture! Here’s a bit more info for the uninitiated:

Comic Theorist Scott McCloud lecturing at RIT

“The smartest guy in comics” speaks to students and the community on September 18th.

On Monday, September 18th, the Rochester Institute of Technology will play host to the famed comic book author, theorist, and lecturer Scott McCloud. McCloud will lecture at RIT’s Ingle Auditorium, located in the Student Alumni Union, from 3.00pm to 5.00pm as part of his 50 State Tour, celebrating the release of his latest book Making Comics. The lecture will include an open Q&A session, with a reception and book signing immediately following. The event is free and open to the greater Rochester community.

Scott McCloud’s books Understanding Comics and Reinventing Comics explore the evolution of graphic literature, from early civilizations to modern works, and the semiotic interpretation of the medium’s form, function, and pacing. With his latest book, Making Comics, McCloud turns his attention to the production of comic books, including approaches to page design, character creation, and various avenues for self publishing.

McCloud’s research has been used in a number of academic and professional disciplines ranging from illustration to video game design. As a speaker, McCloud has lectured at MIT, Harvard University, Electronic Arts, The Smithsonian, Microsoft, and Pixar. For more information on Scott McCloud visit his website http://www.scottmccloud.com.

McCloud is being hosted by RIT’s School of Design, School of Print Media, College of Imaging Arts and Sciences, and the Office of the Provost.

[The Letter]

After a long wait, I am excited to announce that I have accepted a visiting professorship at RIT’s School of Print Media for the 2006/2007 academic year. And the news gets better — barring no unforeseen circumstances, in September of 2007 I will automatically move into a tenure track position at RIT. And by automatically I mean without having to participate in another academic search cycle. From that point on, I have approximately six years to earn a PhD.

This has been in the works for quite a while. However, I’ve been afraid to blog about it until it was a done deal. If this had fallen through, I’d have been crushed. Thankfully, the letter finally arrived this morning, and I personally delivered the signed contract to the Dean this afternoon. I am on cloud nine about this.

Aspects of it will be tough. Seven years (counting this year) isn’t a lot of time to complete a PhD while still carrying a full course load. I’ll be diving into the application process this year and evaluating a number of programs in the Western NY area in the months to come. And RIT has promised to assist me with the PhD process, which is a huge help.

Thanks for being patient with the lack of updates. There are still some surprises to come, but I am relieved to finally be past this one.

Update (6/16)
I just found out that the Exchange link was broken. The current exchange site is: http://www.newcloud.com/exchange

I just found out that Anthro grad students at Chicago have started their own online publication called Exchange. I gave it a quick look over and it seems pretty interesting — I guess I should note that interesting all depends on whether or not you are interested in anthropology to begin with.

As far as my claim of understanding Peircian Semiotics, perhaps that was a little premature. I finally seem to "get" the notion/relation of object, sign (and the corresponding ground relationship betwixt the two), interpretant, and the vectors of determination and representation. I also now have a better handle on why it fits so well with linguistics (as well as how it works differently than Saussurian Semiotics). The only problem is all of that is currently in my head and I still a ways away from being able to explain it coherently. One step closer at least.

Today, at approximately 3.20pm est, I finally understood Peircian semiotics — something that has been vexing me for the better part of a year and a half. Then Dre found out that her job was renewed for another year.

We celebrated these milestones with pho and a Hitchcock movie. Life is good.
